A little bit about myself...

I began my career working in NYC as a pastry chef in the former Bobby Flay restaurants, Mesa Grill and Bolo, followed by editorial stints at Food Arts and Wine Spectator. Then I had my first baby. Everything in my world changed in a way I could have never imagined. Suddenly I had this little person, followed by two more little persons, who needed me 24/7. It has been the best job I've ever had but quite possibly the hardest. I would have days where I would sit down for dinner only to realize I hadn't brushed my teeth yet-or maybe I did but I couldn't remember so I went with it probably didn't happen. I was so tired and couldn't tell you what I did that day but it surely didn't involve a clean house or self-care.
As my children got older and began to do more for themselves and I could take a shower without fearing for my kids' safety while I left them for 6 minutes, I began to regain my sense of self. I have always had this voice in the back of my head telling me to make healthy choices but I didn't always know how to go about this ongoing task.
You see, my dad had lived a sedentary life, working all day in Manhattan, with three hours of commuting on top of it, five days a week. He did not exercise, nor did he focus on healthy eating, and he most certainly didn't understand stress management. He spent the last two decades of his life in and out of the hospital, unable to lose the weight the doctors kept telling him to lose in order to be healthier. He had no idea where to start. I made a pact with myself early on that I would never adopt my dad's lifestyle choices and I always believed in my power to prevent the illnesses he endured.

I am an avid runner and find it to be almost as effective as a meditation. You won't usually find me exercising in groups because when done alone I can let my mind wander or ponder my greatest challenge for that day.

After having kids, I was tired all the time and would exercise from time to time, but couldn't keep a regular schedule. I started to have an innate curiosity about food and felt the need to learn more about how it made me feel. I couldn't control a scared child waking me up in the middle of the night but I could control the food that I ate that allowed me to stay active and made me feel good. Every choice I made effected different needs in my life. I slowly crept from baking cakes and cookies and scones to making chia bars and black lentil salads on the regular because it somehow just felt better. It was a gradual process, and bit-by-bit, I crept toward a healthier lifestyle and way of living. I'm not perfect, but I do strive to be a little better each day.
